Soldiers beat Cloud Dancing at the reservation. Sully assists in setting up the Indians’ escape after realizing that their current way of life on the reserve is intolerable. Sully tells Dr. Mike that they are merely housing the horses for Robert E. rather than telling her the truth in order to obtain more horses. Sully enlists the assistance of Robert E. Dog soldiers start attacking soldiers and nearby families at the same moment.
When Sully is held accountable for the escape, he and Dr. Mike decide that it would be best if he vanishes until things settle down.
Sully and Cloud Dancing attempt to reach the Tongue River Valley following their escape. Sully tries to divert their attention when he notices approaching soldiers so that Cloud Dancing has an opportunity to flee. As he diverts attention, Sully and O’Conner end up stuck on a precipice. A struggle breaks out because O’Connor wants Sully dead, and before Dr. Mike and Sgt. McKay can reach the ledge, O’Connor is killed. McKay believes Sully is dead when they can not see him in the river beneath the ledge, but Dr. Mike is certain he is still alive since Sully left something on a rock.
