Former Big 12 guard signs with Kentucky basketball from transfer portal
Next season, a former Big 12 Conference starting guard will play for the Kentucky Wildcats. Otega Oweh, a former guard for Oklahoma who played for the Sooners for the previous two seasons, declared on Saturday that he would be moving to Kentucky.
On Thursday, Pope, the new UK coach, was seen at Keeneland with renowned former UK basketball player Dan Issel, while Oweh was in Kentucky on a recruiting trip before he signed with UK.
As a transfer portal player, Oweh has visited Texas A&M and Oregon for recruiting visits in addition to Kentucky. On March 25, Oweh declared his intention to access the transfer site.
Oweh, who is 6’5″, made 60 appearances for the Sooners over the past two seasons and started 37 games. In the 2023–24 season, he played in 32 games and made 28 starts, averaging 11.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 1.0 assists per game. He finished as the team’s second-leading scorer the previous season.
Oweh’s 3.5% steal percentage from the previous season placed him among the top 100 players in the country, according to KenPom. Steals divided by defensive possessions is the steal percentage. As a freshman two seasons ago, Oweh averaged 4.8 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. He played in 28 games with nine starts that season for Oklahoma.
Oweh has shot 36.8% on 3-pointers (out of 57 total tries) and 47.9% from the field throughout his time in college. In a news release on Saturday, Pope praised Oweh, saying, “He is excellent at earning visits to the free-throw line and he brings a distinct physicality and intensity to the game.” “Otega picked up the point guard full court in the Big 12 for his entire season last year.” His perseverance on the court is infectious, and Big Blue Nation will
