In advance of NFL free agency, the Eagles have signed tight end Albert Okweugbunam to a one-year contract.

Following a preseason finale in which the versatile tight end caught seven passes for 109 yards and a score, Philadelphia acquired Okwuegbunam from Denver. However, the Broncos struck a deal with the Eagles because they could not fit him on their roster.

Under offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, Philadelphia chose not to use the pass catcher in any of the prior seasons after trading a 2025 sixth-round pick and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Broncos

Okweugbunam, a Missouri native selected in the fourth round, was only targeted once in his four games of action the previous season and failed to make a catch.

He should find a position with the creative play-caller when he returns under offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who is in his first season. Here are four conclusions from the perplexing decision, even though the change has not yet been officially announced.

Philadelphia dropped from third in points per game (28.1) to seventh (25.5); they also dropped from ninth in passing (241.5 yards per game) to 16th (225.5) and from fifth in rushing (147.6) to eighth (128.8) as the Eagles’ offense regressed due to quarterback Jalen Hurts’ career-high 15 interceptions.

Under Moore, Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys had a stellar season in 2021, scoring 37 touchdowns and ten interceptions while finishing with 4,449 passing yards and a 68.8% completion percentage.

With Moore, Prescott set two career passing attempt records, with 596 in 2019 and 2021. Moore should use Okwuegbunam more in the passing game, leaving Jack Stoll in the red zone or on a clear rushing down.

It is clear how badly the Eagles were taught offensively when you consider that Okwuegbunam, who was seldom used the previous season, would return in 2024. For over a month, Brian Johnson was unable to find a position for the gifted pass catcher, even with Dallas Goedert.
