49ers make move that would conflict greatly with recent comments about Brock Purdy in latest 2025 mock draft
During their end-of-season press conference this week, Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch made it clear that they were committed to Brock Purdy as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. There will be a lot of talk about the Niners possibly seeking a replacement, though, until they deliver on their promises with a long-term contract.
Additionally, according to A to Z Sports’ most recent three-round 2025 mock draft, the 49ers are sending out a very different message on their feelings regarding Purdy.
In a joint mock draft created by the NFL Draft writers at A to Z Sports, Ian Valentino made the selections for San Francisco and chose to have the Niners use their second-round pick as a literal dart throw. He suggested that the 49ers take the first steps in moving on from Purdy and selected Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart with the 43rd overall pick.
“It might be prudent for the 49ers to franchise tag Brock Purdy and search for a possible upgrade,” Valentino wrote. Kyle Shanahan’s second chance at a Trey Lance-style project is lost when Jalen Milroe is passed over, so they may choose the more straightforward projection—the effective Jaxson Dart.
Although it is reasonable to have concerns about paying Purdy big dollar, the 49ers have recently made it apparent that they plan to retain him for the long run, even in the face of a disappointing 2024 campaign.
Therefore, investing in a quarterback in the top 50, even if he just finished his senior year leading the FBS in passer rating (180.7) and yards per attempt (10.8). does not make much sense for the 49ers considering their other roster requirements.
