According to reports, the Los Angeles Lakers are prepared to extend LeBron James’ contract with them for three years, for a total of $162 million.
LeBron James, the star of the Los Angeles Lakers, has a big decision to make this weekend because his contract status is still uncertain. James’ son Bronny was selected by the Lakers with the 55th overall pick, so it’s difficult to
see him leaving the team, but the team still has to make some roster improvements to be competitive again. James has the option to opt out of his contract in the last year and negotiate a maximum deal with the Lakers, which is reportedly worth about $160 million over three seasons and includes a full no-trade provision.
LeBron would receive slightly more money but would not be subject to a no-trade clause if he chooses to opt in at $51.4 million and then signs an extension worth $162 million over three seasons. If D’Angelo Russell were to opt out and sign with another team, the Lakers would have the opportunity to acquire a complete mid-level exception in free agency if James took less than his maximum. LeBron probably wouldn’t turn down money, but according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst on the “Hoop Collective” podcast, he will consider the Lakers’ proposal:
Some possible choices on the free agent market include Jonas Valanciunas, Tyus Jones, Kelly Oubre Jr., Buddy Hield, Gary Trent Jr., Caleb Martin, and Derrick Jones Jr. If Russell decides to opt out, James accepts a contract reduction, then the Lakers open up the entire mid-level. Even while all of those are good choices that would benefit the Lakers, it’s difficult to see James accepting a lower salary unless it results in the organization signing an All-Star.
