Doris Day is 96 years old and happy. With no regrets, the renowned actress, best known as America’s Sweetheart, departed Hollywood in 1973 to devote her life to helping animals in need. “I’m fortunate to have excellent health, amazing friends, amazing supporters, and a ton of priceless four-leggers. What more could I possibly ask for? Day said on Wednesday to Closer Weekly.
“My greatest accomplishment is the important work I do for my two charities, but I loved my singing and acting career,” she continued. Day is also keen to continue working. In addition to graciously responding to fan correspondence from all around the globe, she continues to be involved with the Doris Day Animal Foundation, which provides scholarships to veterinary students. She ensures that the applications that aspirants submit all year long are reviewed. The movie legend wouldn’t have it any other way and surrounds herself with animal companions.
“I have a lot of dogs and cats in my house,” she said. But Day is determined to avoid the spotlight despite her long Hollywood career. “There are no regrets,” she declared. “I’ve always thought that everything unfolds precisely as it should.
“My son was the love of my life. We talked every day, and I miss him very much. [But] we can’t change the past. I think you have to get through the bad times to appreciate the good things in life. I’ve had my share of both, and I always say, ‘I’m like one of those dolls with the round bottom: If life deals you a blow, you just have to bounce right back!'” Day did, however, suffer a private and painful loss when her only son Terry Melcher, then 62, passed away from cancer in 2004.
However, Day finds solace in the appreciation she continues to receive from her followers these days. She said, “I love it and I’m very grateful for it, but I don’t understand it.” I adore them all, and it means more to me than words can express. I still have a lot left to experience in this amazing life. I believe that the greatest is still to come! I’m incredibly proud of the progress the animal welfare community has accomplished and is still making. Day also never forgot the people who had faith in her. Day said to Fox News in December that she still treasured her memories of working with Rose Marie, the star of “Dick Van Dyke Show,” who passed away that year at the age of 94.
