We chose to delve even deeper into the age-old GOAT debate because there is an intriguing voting trend that just has to be investigated, even though our (anonymous) NBA player poll was released Monday and a record 142 players responded to some of the most intriguing questions pertaining to their league.
Paraphrase
Even though Michael Jordan won the “Greatest of All Time” award for the third time in a row, his once-large margin over LeBron James has gotten smaller with each poll. James came so close to taking the mantle this time. The statistics makes its point quite evident.
Jordan received 73 percent of the vote in 2019 (the first time The Athletic ran the poll), followed by James at 11.9 percent (a 61.1 percentage point difference).
Why, though, has Jordan’s lead decreased so much? We wanted the participants to give their own explanations.
