Not a recluse, Doris Day lived out her latter years answering to…
Even though Doris Day devoted her last years to tirelessly promoting animal rights, she never lost sight of her admirers. Day, who rose to prominence in Hollywood throughout the 1950s and 1960s, died in 2019 at the age of 97. Her death at her Carmel Valley, California, residence was verified at the time by the Doris Day Animal Foundation. “Property From the Estate of Doris Day,” an online auction, will be held on April 4 and 5 by Julien’s Auctions. The Doris Day Animal Foundation, an iconic charity that she started in 1978 and that provides funding to nonprofit organizations that support animal care and protection, will get all of the auction’s revenues.
The actress was always amazed by the love she received from fans throughout the years, according to Lea Price, a longtime friend of Day’s for over 40 years who serves on the board of directors for the Doris Day Animal Foundation, which Fox News reported. I don’t think any other star maintained as much of a relationship with her fans as she did, Price said. She cherished her followers. She made everyone feel like they were her pals by referring to them as her friends. She would make an effort to respond to as many of their letters as she could.
Price noted, “‘You saved me’ was the recurring theme.” She never quite grasped that. She was constantly thinking, “I did nothing.” Although she was touched by the gesture, she was constantly in awe of the amount of affection she would get from people all around the world. Additionally, she received hundreds of letters each month up until the day of her death.
“With Doris, you really got what you saw,” said Price. “She was just an upbeat, joyful person.” “With Six You Get Eggroll,” a 1968 comedy about a widow and a widower who exchange families, was Day’s last motion picture. She turned to television as more explicit sex was becoming common in movies. When “The Doris Day Show” ran on CBS from 1968 until 1973, it was a moderate success. Day never went back to Hollywood, but Price maintained that she wasn’t a recluse at all.
