When an artist announces a “last” endeavor, there is always the chance that it will not be, which is why people continue to wonder if Harrison Ford’s latest attempt will be his final one as the grizzled veteran Indiana Jones.
However, the actor’s response to BBC News is clear-cut.
“This is my last movie,” he declares. “And with this last film, I was always ambitious.”
Given that Ford is already 80 years old, one could argue that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny—the franchise’s first film since 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull—was not even necessary to bring the series to a close.
However, the actor acknowledges that time has passed and says he wanted to give this cherished character “an emotional ending.”
“I wanted to see that expanded into a complex plot since we have been doing these pictures for 40 years and we can not deny the influence of aging on the character,” he says.
The movie plays off the character’s advanced age by having the archaeology professor whine while pulling off action scenes with his goddaughter Helena, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with the two of them searching for an antiquated dial that has the power to change the path of history.
The movie is full of inside jokes about the character and features the Nazis, who are played in this picture by Danish actor and former Bond villain Mads Mikkelsen. The Nazis are Indiana Jones’s biggest adversaries.
Ford, however, maintains that he would not give in to temptation: “I wanted this character to have an emotional finale; I was not so interested in performing the same thing over and over again.”
