Robert Plant, the lead singer of Led Zeppelin, admitted to having a foggy recollection of the time Stairway to Heaven was composed in court during the copyright hearing.
The band Spirit claims the band stole their guitar riff for Stairway to Heaven in the 1970s, and he claimed he could not recall ever meeting them.
Plant said, “I do not have a recollection of practically everybody I have been out with,” which had the court erupt in laughter.
On behalf of Spirit is late musician Randy Wolfe, a lawsuit was filed.
According to his estate, the famous first few bars of Stairway to Heaven and the beginning riff of the 1968 song Taurus are nearly identical. The chord progression in question, according to defense attorneys, is quite common and has been in use for more than 300 years.
The prosecution claims that Spirit is song became well-known to Led Zeppelin after the two bands performed together in 1970 at Mother’s, a venue in Plant’s hometown of Birmingham.
Mark Andes, the bassist for Spirit, testified last week that he played snooker with Plant after meeting him during the event.
Mark Andes, the bassist for Spirit, testified last week that he played snooker with Plant after meeting him during the event.
Plant maintained that he did not remember the evening, claiming it would be difficult to recall a one-time meeting from 40 years ago amidst all the “hubbub and bustle.”
“With the passage of time, I can not really remember Spirit or anyone playing there,” he remarked.
Plant blamed a serious vehicle accident he had on his way home from the club for some of his memory loss. He told the court that the windshield of his Jaguar was “buried” in his face and that both he and his wife had sustained head injuries in the collision.
