Shailene Woodley, star of “Big Little Lies,” on her collaboration with Meryl Streep: ‘She’s simply such a great human being’
In a statement from the California Film Commission, Woodley, who is also producing the picture, said, “Janis Joplin loved California so much—from the stoops of San Francisco to the wooden walls of Sunset Sound, the state became the stage upon which she explored not just the world of music, but the world of her vibrant humanity.”
“I feel like Janis would be beaming broadly as she speeds along the PCH in her surreal Porsche, knowing that her narrative is providing funds and opportunities to the people and place that were so important to her.”
“We are very pleased to have gained the green light to do so,” Woodley continued, expressing the belief she and the other producers on the project have that “California is the only place to capture a piece of Janis’s life with authenticity and sincerity!”
Thanks to her performances as lead vocalist of Big Brother and the Holding Company at the Monterey Pop Festival and as a solo artist at Woodstock, Joplin became well-known as one of the most captivating artists of her day. At the age of 27, she passed away on October 4, 1970. She was in the process of recording “Pearl,” her second solo album, which was released following her passing and topped the Billboard 200 chart for nine weeks.
Woodley, an Emmy-nominated actress for “Big Little Lies,” most recently acted in the Starz series “Three Women,” as well as the movies “Ferrari” and “Dumb Money.”
