Pete Rose: “I spent $100 for a lifetime suspension…
Pete Rose, the three-time World Series winner, claims that his lifetime ban from Major League Baseball stems from his wagering on the game “cost me $100 million dollars.” On the “No Filter” podcast featuring Eli Zaret, Bob Page, and former Tigers pitcher Denny McLain, Rose said, “I screwed up.” “I would have been responsible for overseeing the Reds and all off-field matters for $3–4 million annually.
“Those who claim that I haven’t received enough punishment are ignorant of the subject. I’m the ideal illustration. If you break the rules, you will pay the price.” Rose, who holds the record for most hits with 3,215, and McLain, who captained the 1968 World Series-winning Tigers with 31 victories, are the only two players to have gambling suspensions since the Black Sox incident of 1919.
According to McLain, “seventeen states have legalized gambling.” “If this is going to be legal, then what we’ve done should be wiped clean.” Rose states that he is aware that “he has no chance of getting in the Hall until I die.” Rose was suspended in 1989.
