original theater lobby card for Play It Cool, starring Billy Fury. Including, of course, Helen…
“IT WAS HARDLY A BAND – just myself and two school pals,” the legendary British pop and jazz singer Helen Shapiro recalls. Everyone was limited to playing only my four-string plastic guitar, which I used to tune like a ukulele. We were all around ten years old when my friend Steven brought his friend Marc Feld, a plump young man who asked if he may join your group. Since he was only nine, we were a little hesitant to accept him. However, he appeared to possess something, and he had a noticeable quiff that he said he could comb over his entire face. He joined us, and we sang Elvis songs together.
Marc Bolan was thus involved in Shapiro’s first venture at a very young age. On June 23, 1961, EMI released her second single for the Columbia label, four years later. With the title You Do not Know, she would receive her first UK Number 1.
