The mindset of Carlos Alcaraz is revealed when Alexander Zverev opens up about…
According to Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz selected the starting lineup for all of Sunday’s decisive games, which helped Team Europe win the Laver Cup. The 21-year-old showed incredible character to add to a thrilling final day as Team World was not given a third straight victory.
Thanks to the winning performances of Alcaraz, Zverev, and Casper Ruud, there were fireworks at the Uber Arena in Berlin during captains Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe’s last year in the position.
But in front of his home supporters, the German pulled together, denying Tiafoe the victory he needed. After enjoying doubles success with Ruud earlier in the day, Alcaraz then had the chance to complete the comeback.
And he did it by defeating Taylor Fritz in a single set, giving Team Europe a 13-11 triumph after they had trailed 7-11.
In the aftermath, Zverev highlighted just how vital Alcaraz was to the outcome, showing his leadership role away from the court.
“What was the thinking? Well, it was quite simple. We had a meeting last night. It was extremely simple,” the world No. 2 said. “Carlos walked in and decided what we were going to do, and we went to do that.” Zverev then went on to discuss how important Alcaraz was to the result and revealed his leadership role off the court.
“I want to play doubles with Casper,” he declared. Daniil will next play Shelton in a singles match. You will not succumb to Tiafoe.
He exuded such confidence in me that I had never felt in myself in my entire life. “I am going to win the deciding match,” he declared.
Alcaraz expressed his happiness as Team Europe won back the Laver Cup—their fifth in the competition’s seven editions.
