The University of North Carolina has announced ambitious plans to expand Kenan Memorial Stadium, a move that could make it the largest venue in Tar Heel football history.
The project, still in its early design stages, is expected to increase seating capacity significantly while enhancing the fan experience with upgraded facilities, premium seating options, and modern amenities. University officials confirmed that the expansion is part of a broader initiative to elevate UNC athletics and strengthen the gameday atmosphere in Chapel Hill.
“Kenan Stadium is one of the most iconic venues in college football,” said UNC Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham. “This expansion is about honoring its tradition while preparing for the future. Our goal is to make it the ultimate home for Tar Heel football and an unmatched destination for our fans.”
The stadium, originally opened in 1927, currently holds around 50,500 fans. While exact figures haven’t been released, sources suggest the expansion could push capacity well past 60,000, putting it on par with some of the largest stadiums in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
In addition to more seating, the plans call for improved concourses, upgraded concessions, new technology for in-game entertainment, and expanded hospitality areas. The project is also expected to bring significant economic benefits to the Chapel Hill community, attracting larger crowds and boosting local businesses on game weekends.
Construction timelines have not been finalized, but the university has assured fans that the expansion will be carried out in phases to minimize disruptions during football season.
