After disclosing that he will have more knee surgery, Roger Federer made a devastating disclosure on social media that has rocked the tennis world.
The 20-time grand slam champion acknowledges that he will be sidelined from tennis for “many months” due to this latest setback, despite his struggles to recover from previous knee surgery.
Given that many fans are now more certain than ever that the 40-year-old will soon retire from tennis, Federer’s tragic disclosure raises major questions about his future in the game.
The Swiss maestro has not explicitly said as much, but he appears committed to getting healthy and back on the courts. This has dashed his small chances of appearing at the forthcoming US Open.
In a video uploaded to his Instagram account, 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer declared, “I will be on crutches for many weeks and out of the game for many months.”
Federer went on, “I want to give myself a ray of hope to return to the tour in some form or another.”
“Please understand that I am realistic. I am aware of how challenging it is to have another operation at my age. I will give it a shot. I want to run about and be in good health.”
In 2020, Federer played in just six games and had two knee surgeries. As of 2021, he has only played thirteen matches.
In order to rest his knee, he had already withdrawn from the Olympics in Tokyo.
It was his first straight-set loss in the competition since he lost to Mario Ancic in the first round in 2002. It was also only his 14th loss at the All England Club in 119 matches.
Not only was it the third time at a Slam, but it was also the first time he had dropped a set 6-0 at Wimbledon.
On Sunday, he said, “I have been checking on my knee with the physicians a lot.”
“It is just not the way to go on because I injured myself far more during the grass-court season.”
