A familiar face from North Carolina basketball lore is back in the headlines — and in a surprising location.
Former Tar Heels standout and fan favorite Theo Pinson has signed an unexpected contract with EuroLeague powerhouse Maccabi Tel Aviv, reigniting his professional basketball career after months out of the spotlight. The deal, announced early Tuesday morning, is reportedly a two-year agreement with a player option for a third season.
Pinson, known for his charismatic leadership and versatile play during his UNC days (2014–2018), had most recently been bouncing between the NBA G League and short stints with the Dallas Mavericks. After not being re-signed in the 2024–25 NBA season, many fans assumed his playing days might be winding down.
Instead, the 29-year-old guard/forward is heading overseas in what some are calling a bold career revival.
“I’ve always played with passion and energy — I’m excited to bring that to Tel Aviv,” Pinson said in a statement. “This is a fresh start, and I’m ready to compete at a high level again.”
UNC fans on social media quickly celebrated the news, with many expressing both surprise and excitement. Pinson, a key contributor to UNC’s 2017 national championship run, remains a beloved figure in Tar Heel circles for his emotional leadership and locker-room presence.
Maccabi Tel Aviv, a perennial contender in the EuroLeague, confirmed the signing and praised Pinson’s experience, versatility, and defensive tenacity.
“Theo brings a winning pedigree and veteran mentality to our locker room,” said Maccabi’s head coach Oded Kattash. “We’re thrilled to add a player of his caliber.”
While it’s unclear if this move will eventually open a door back to the NBA, one thing is certain: Pinson’s journey is far from over — and once again, Tar Heel Nation is along for the ride.
