As pressure continues to mount around the future of North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis, one Tar Heel legend is stepping up to defend him — and he’s got a message for fans calling for Davis’s firing.
Former UNC star and NCAA champion Raymond Felton addressed the growing wave of criticism in a recent interview, urging patience, perspective, and loyalty from the Carolina faithful.
“People need to calm down and remember who we’re talking about,” Felton said. “Hubert Davis is a Tar Heel through and through. He took us to a national title game in his first full season. That doesn’t just happen by accident.”
The calls for Davis’s job have grown louder following a disappointing postseason run and inconsistent play from a talented roster. But Felton, echoing the sentiments of several former UNC players, believes Davis deserves more time and support from the fanbase.
“This program is about family,” Felton added. “And family doesn’t turn on each other after a couple of tough seasons. Hubert’s doing things the right way — building young men, building a culture. That takes time.”
Social media has seen a sharp divide, with some fans echoing Felton’s call for unity, while others insist that UNC’s championship standards require urgent changes at the top.
Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham has not issued any recent comments on Davis’s job status, but insiders suggest the administration remains committed to a long-term vision with Davis at the helm — at least for now.
As the offseason unfolds, Davis will have another opportunity to reshape his roster and silence critics. But for now, he can count on the support of some of UNC’s greatest — and perhaps that’s exactly what he needs.
