A rising Kentucky Wildcats standout has suddenly become the center of a heated NBA Draft controversy — and it’s all thanks to one word: “sleeper.”
In a recent *Sports Illustrated* feature on under-the-radar NBA prospects, sophomore guard Malik Rowe was listed as a “potential sleeper pick” for the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft. But what was meant as a compliment has sparked a fiery debate across the basketball world — and fans are not taking it lightly.
> “Sleeper? He carried Kentucky on his back all season!” one fan raged on X (formerly Twitter). “Y’all really disrespecting greatness right now.”
Rowe, who averaged 18.9 points, 6.2 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game this past season, led the Wildcats to the Elite Eight and earned SEC First Team honors. Yet many analysts still project him as a mid-to-late first-round pick — a placement that fans and some NBA insiders are calling criminally low.
Former NBA guard and ESPN commentator Jay Williams weighed in, saying:
> “Malik Rowe has top-10 talent. Period. The fact that he’s being labeled a ‘sleeper’ just shows how flawed the scouting process is sometimes.”
Some scouts have reportedly questioned Rowe’s “NBA-ready frame” and shooting consistency, but others argue those criticisms are nitpicking and ignore his leadership, court vision, and explosive scoring ability.
The reaction has reignited long-running complaints from Kentucky faithful that their players are often undervalued coming out of college — despite the program’s track record of producing elite NBA talent.
> “Every year it’s the same story,” said one fan. “They doubt our guys, and then watch them dominate at the next level.”
Whether Rowe uses this perceived slight as fuel remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: his draft-day journey just got a whole lot more interesting.
Is Malik Rowe this year’s biggest draft steal in the making — or is the league sleeping on another Kentucky gem?
Stay tuned. The 2025 NBA Draft is about to get very real.
