The tennis player Alexander Zverev’s lawsuit is dropped by the court after…
After tennis player Alexander Zverev agreed to pay fines totaling 200,000 euros ($218,000) and struck an out-of-court settlement with his former partner, a German court on Friday dismissed the case against him.
According to German news agency dpa, state prosecutors and attorneys for Zverev and his former partner, Brenda Patea, agreed to conclude the trial in a district court in Berlin. Zverev consented to reimburse the state for fines totaling 150,000 euros and donate 50,000 euros to charity.
Prosecutors claim that during a dispute in Berlin in May 2020, Zverev, the world No. 4, shoved Patea against a wall and choked her. Zverev is charged with committing bodily harm. Zverev refuted any misconduct.
Zverev challenged a penalty order that was imposed in October, which included a requirement that he pay fines totaling 450,000 euros ($490,000). This led to the matter going to trial. When a suspect does not challenge a penalty order, it is used in Germany to resolve certain criminal cases without a trial.
Following discussions between Zverev and Patea’s attorneys regarding resolving their differences “at all levels in which there were difficulties in previous years,” Judge Barbara Lüders informed the court that she was abandoning the case.
According to Lüders, the ex-couple wished to put an end to their public spat and “move forwards,” including with regard to “their joint custody of their child.”
