Tensions are boiling over in Denver after the Nuggets’ narrow 106-101 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 6, and head coach Michael Malone didn’t hold back when addressing what he believed was a major factor in the outcome: poor officiating.
In a fiery postgame press conference, Malone criticized the referees for what he described as a “clear and repeated failure” to call fouls on the Clippers’ physical defense against Nikola Jokic, who absorbed several hard hits in the paint with little response from the whistle.
“I’m tired of seeing our MVP get hammered every night with no calls,” Malone said. “We’re not asking for favors — we’re asking for fairness. You can’t let one team play football while we’re playing basketball.”
Jokic, who finished the game with 28 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists, was visibly frustrated throughout the contest, often pleading with officials after taking contact on drives and post-ups. Despite the lack of calls, he maintained composure and avoided technical fouls.
The Nuggets’ locker room echoed Malone’s sentiment, but the message wasn’t just about officiating — it was also a rallying cry for a more physical approach in Game 7. Forward Aaron Gordon said, “We’ve got to match their energy and toughness. If the refs aren’t going to call it, we have to adapt.”
With the series tied 3-3, Game 7 is set to be a fierce showdown between two determined squads. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 PM ET, and all eyes will be on how the Nuggets respond — both in terms of their play and their physicality.
