As part of an ongoing look back at the storied history of Kentucky basketball, we revisit the 1925–26 season—an early but pivotal chapter in the program’s rise to national prominence.
Under head coach Ray Eklund, the Wildcats posted a 15–3 overall record, continuing to establish themselves as a dominant force in the Southern Conference. The team showcased a disciplined, defense-first approach, with standout players like Basil Hayden helping lead the charge.
Though the NCAA Tournament was still over a decade away from existence, Kentucky’s performance in the 1925–26 season set the tone for what would become a tradition of excellence. Eklund’s leadership and the team’s regional success helped lay the groundwork for the Wildcats’ eventual evolution into a national powerhouse.
This season also marked one of the last years before the arrival of legendary coach Adolph Rupp, who would take over in 1930 and forever change the trajectory of Kentucky basketball.
The 1925–26 campaign is a reminder of the program’s deep roots and steady growth—proof that greatness doesn’t happen overnight, but is built year by year.
Stay tuned as we continue our season-by-season look at Kentucky’s basketball legacy.
