In December 2024, head coach Mark Pope was dismissed from his position amid allegations of illegal activities, including improper recruiting practices and possible violations of NCAA rules. The university’s internal investigation uncovered actions that violated university policies and potentially state and federal laws, leading to Pope’s immediate removal from team activities.
This abrupt departure came after star guard Lamont Butler announced his decision to transfer from the program in November 2024, amid reports of internal conflicts and dissatisfaction with his role under Coach Pope.
Football Program Challenges
The football team has also faced significant challenges under head coach Mark Stoops. The 2024 season concluded with a disappointing 4-8 record, marking the Wildcats’ first losing season since 2015. This performance led to widespread criticism from fans and former players, who cited issues such as a perceived decline in performance and internal dysfunction within the program. Despite these challenges, financial considerations have complicated any potential coaching changes. Coach Stoops’ contract includes a substantial buyout clause, estimated at approximately $37.5 million if terminated after the 2025 season, making his dismissal financially impractical.
