As their fan base and college basketball await word on John Calipari’s future, all eyes are on Kentucky right now. However, it seems that the decision is moving in a particular direction, with an emphasis on the next 24 to 48 hours to begin this week.
Matt Norlander of CBS Sports gave his Twitter update on the chronology on Monday night. According to one of his sources, Calipari and AD Mitch Barnhart will meet on Tuesday. Instead of firing Calipari as head coach, the focus of the discussion will be on what the program will look like going forward.
“This is the most recent information from Kentucky, according to a source: Calipari, who will go on his local radio show in 30 minutes, and AD Mitch Barnhart have not yet met but will do so tomorrow,” Norlander said. “The meeting’s goal is to concentrate on major program enhancements, not necessarily separation.”
Norlander stated in a follow-up tweet that this has been a challenging process because of Calipari’s buyout and relationship with Barnhart. However, at this point, it appears that Barnhart intends to keep Calipari, and Calipari anticipates returning to Lexington for the upcoming campaign.
Following the team’s season-ending loss to Oakland in the NCAA Tournament, Kentucky’s level of frustration has reached a pinnacle in recent days. It concluded a five-year run in which the Wildcats had a 105-52 (.669) record. During that time, they have failed to win a conference championship and have not made it past the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament.
