In order to fully immerse himself in the world of television, Berlanti, who placed a strong emphasis on his own personal journey, pondered on his early years and recalled spending time in front of the sole color TV in the house.
“I was a closeted gay child and there [were] not many gay characters on television back then, and it is impossible to articulate how lonely it was at the time,” Berlanti said. There were no LGBTQ+ advocacy groups in schools, and there was no Internet to interact with other gay children. At the time, if a child could name all four of the Golden Girls and watched Dynasty, Dallas, it was the only way to determine whether or not he might be gay.
