Actor Brandon Lee died in an accidental shooting on a movie set in 1993, and on Friday, his sister Shannon Lee weighed on the similar firearm accident that took the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Hutchins was shot Thursday during production when Alec Baldwin pulled the trigger on a prop firearm on the set of the Western film “Rust.” She died and the film’s director, Joel Souza, was injured. Brandon Lee, the son of legendary martial artist Bruce Lee, was killed by a prop revolver on the set of “The Crow.”
Shannon posted on an account dedicated to her brother, saying, “Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and to Joel Souza and all involved in the event on ‘Rust.'” The post ends with an emoji of a shattered heart, saying, “No one should ever be killed by a gun on a film set. Period.”
What went wrong on the “Rust” set in New Mexico is being looked into.
“We along with the whole film community in New Mexico are heartbroken by the tragedy that happened on the set of Rust, yesterday,” the New Mexico Film Office said in a statement posted on Friday. We are sending our warmest sympathies to Ms. Halyna Hutchins’ family and sending good vibes to Mr. Joel Souza for a full recovery. At all times, the security and welfare of the actors, crew, and filmmakers in New Mexico come first.”
