Goelz joined the Muppets cast in the early 1970s, and when The Muppet Show made its premiere in 1976, he played the lead with Gonzo. Along with working on other Muppet-related projects including Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth, he has also portrayed numerous other Muppet characters, such as Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Waldorf. We asked him in the interview below why, after all these years, the Muppets—and Gonzo in particular—remain so
Cheryl Eddy, io9: At this time, the Muppets have been in the public spotlight for more than 40, if not 50, years. However, it feels like a particularly noteworthy accomplishment to have every episode of The Muppet Show accessible for streaming. What do you think about the show perhaps attracting a whole new fan base now?

Goelz, Dave: I am ecstatic. I must admit that I am quite happy for at least a few reasons. One is that now that I am going to see it, it will be quite simple. I never gave it much thought while it was on VHS and DVD, but now that I can do it, I am excited to relive some of those moments. I have no doubt that I will recall a variety of little incidents that occurred during the filming of the episodes. I am therefore thrilled about that.
