YouTube Gold: The Reasons Behind Larry Bird’s Declining Shooting…

A legendary figure in NBA history, Larry Bird is well-known for his ability to shoot, his amazing passing vision, and his trash talk.

What most people are unaware of, though, is that after he left Indiana State, his shooting ability changed, if not completely disappeared.

Bird attempted to catch a ball in his glove while playing softball. His shooting hand, the index finger on his right hand, was bent way back for some reason.

He learned the following day that he had caused some pretty significant damage and that surgery was necessary.

This posed an existential threat to his career as he had not yet signed with the Celtics.

Boston eventually learned of it and summoned him. Red Auerbach took him to the gym, where he was told he looked fine, but Bird claimed that he never fully recovered his shooting ability after that. And it’s astounding when you consider how talented he was. This clear photo depicts the appearance of his finger.
