There have always been fierce rivalries in the NBA. Russell versus Wilt. Magic versus Bird. Isaiah versus Jordan. Shaq vs. Kobe (laughing).

There was an extremely nasty one-on-one rivalry between Bill Laimbeer and Larry Bird. Those guys didn’t get along at all. Certain guys definitely got under Bird’s skin. In addition to getting into a furious altercation with the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, he is best known for his big fight with Julius Erving, in which both players had their hands on the other’s throats.

Nonetheless, he held great regard for both of them, and Jabbar subsequently remarked that Bird was the most resilient player he had ever faced. Erving and I shook hands and made up at the next game.

That has never occurred, and most likely never will, between Laimbeer and Bird.

To be fair, Bird thought of Laimbeer as a dirty player. And Bird was furious when Laimbeer knocked him out in the 1987 playoffs. After they parted ways, he charged up swinging and threw the basketball at Laimbeer’s head (as you’ll see, Robert Parish repaid Laimbeer in the following game).
