Which Celtic, Larry Bird or Bill Russell, would you prefer to start your team with?

He was, in actuality, the greatest sports winner in history.

It appears that was his only action.

Russell started a dynasty that won nine NBA titles in a row and eleven in a 13-year span after leading the University of San Francisco to consecutive NCAA titles, leading the United States to the gold medal in the Olympics, and then joining the Boston Celtics.

During his career, he played in 14 winner-take-all games (college and Olympics), and his team won EVERY game.

Naturally, Russell was the primary cause. He became one of the greatest players of all time in the NBA thanks to his rebounding and defensive prowess.

Then, in a rare move in basketball history, he turned into a player-coach. More significantly, though, he was the first Black head coach in American professional sports history. In addition, he guided the Celtics to yet another title.

The Celtics were 824-358 during his playing career, winning 70% of their games. With a league MVP award five times and an average of 15 points and 22 rebounds per game, he was a member of the All-Star team for twelve of his thirteen seasons.
