Excitement has been building over Kone-Doherty ever since his arrival on Merseyside last summer. Still only 17, the Irishman looks to have ramped things up further this season.

And judging by a video posted by Football Daily this afternoon, the flying winger has really caught the eye of Jurgen Klopp.

Kone-Doherty has trained with the first-team before, but with the big game against Everton just two days away, a debut feels closer than ever.

With Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota returning, Klopp’s forward options do look well-stocked ahead of the match against the Blues.

But Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez were in action in South America not all that long ago. Perhaps Jurgen is just hedging his bets in case any of his senior options aren’t quite ready.

Young midfielder James McConnell was also spotted in the footage, having impressed the manager in pre-season.

Kone-Doherty continues with first-team

It would be a major surprise if Kone-Doherty were even in the matchday squad for the weekend.

But to see him in training alongside all of Liverpool’s brightest and best today is really, really encouraging.

His rise through the age groups at Anfield hasn’t been as dramatic as Ben Doak’s, but Trent has quietly gone about making a name for himself.

Upon signing from Derry City, the forward was labelled as being ‘unbelievable’ [The Athletic]. So far, Kone-Doherty has been steadily living up to that.

It may not be Saturday that Liverpool fans get their first ever glimpse of him, but a debut now shouldn’t be all that far away.

Depending on injuries and suspensions, perhaps we’ll see Kone-Doherty get a run-out in the Europa League at some stage. The final is in Dublin after all. Now what a story that could be.

For now though, just keep on working, Trent. You’re very much heading in the right direction.
