The three positions Mason Mount can play for Manchester United have been revealed to Erik ten Hag.

In the FA Cup final, Manchester United’s midfield dilemma was made clear.

Christian Eriksen played farther forward because Bruno Fernandes was moved out wide to create room for a more durable central duo of Fred and Casemiro. The Dane has had a respectable season, but he struggled to make an impact at Wembley. Erik ten Hag is working hard to bolster it, and United and Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount have reached an agreement on terms.

The 24-year-old England international may end up fetching a premium transfer fee for a player in the last year of his deal, but he has talent and variety that United lacks at the moment. More than 250 senior appearances and 36 England caps precede his arrival.

Ten Hag’s starting midfield of Casemiro, Eriksen, and Fernandes as a 10 is more than capable of competing with most Premier League teams, but below that, United has the depth they need to catch champions Manchester City. Mount would offer a starting option and adaptable cover, content either centrally or widely as needed.

Having Mount available will prove to be a more advantageous alternative for the Reds because Eriksen’s workload is likely to be controlled and Casemiro is at risk of being suspended. While he has occasionally divided opinion for England, he has proven his mettle for Chelsea since breaking into the lineup at Stamford Bridge, and his international manager Gareth Southgate has no qualms about the quality and versatility the Three Lions man King possess.
