According to ABC, the ninth season of the TV show Castle might go forward without stars Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic. Executive producers Terence Paul Winter and Alexi Hawley have stated to TV Guide that while they are amenable to a spin-off featuring fresh leads, they would much rather see the cast return for a ninth season of Castle.
Hawley tells TVGuide.com, “If we had our way, it would be the same cast, it would be the same show.” We have done some exciting things this year to give it a somewhat distinct vibe that might definitely continue into Season 9. However, we both know that Castle has always been about Beckett and Castle, and we have a lot invested in this. Therefore, the thought of that not occurring is unsettling, and we are hoping against it.
Even if the stars leave the popular criminal drama series, Hawley and co-showrunner Winter are “exited” to carry on with the plot, according to TV Guide. The EPs think Castle still has “a lot of life” in it.
Hawley is still conscious of the idea that, should Fillion and Katic decide against returning for a ninth season, the eighth season finale will need to offer some closure to fans. While hinting at Castle season nine, he spoke with TV Guide about penning a season eight Castle finale that might, if necessary, serve as a Castle series finale.
