Nicolò Barella may be left amid $76m Newcastle transfer as Liverpool proven right on Mason Mount

Newcastle has decided on a $76 million signing, which means that it will pivot away from Nicol Barella amid another offer for Mason Mount, according to the Liverpool rivals roundup.

There is frequently a chain reaction when it comes to one transaction leading on toward another as Liverpool and the other Premier League teams start to click into gear in the transfer market, with the domino effect frequently the outcome of one huge move.

That has not yet come this summer, as of yet. However, given that big-spending teams like Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle, and Arsenal are among those who must spend heavily, it won’t be long until there is movement.

According to The Athletic, Manchester City has joined Arsenal in the fight to sign West Ham captain Declan Rice. Manchester United and Newcastle have also been hard at work on deals with high-profile transactions appearing to be getting closer.

Chelsea, meanwhile, may be about to capitalize on the Saudi Pro League’s new source of money, as players like Callum Hudson-Odoi (via The Athletic) are reportedly being lined up for lucrative moves to the Middle East.

Here, Liverpool.com scans the other major clubs in the Premier League and around Europe to see what news is circulating there.

Mason Mount transfer latest

Chelsea rejected a second offer from Manchester United for England player Mason Mount worth $57 million (£45 million/€52 million) and a further $6.4 million (£5.0 million/€5.8 million) in add-ons, according to The Athletic.

According to the source, Chelsea is seeking $76m (£60m/€70m) plus $6.4m (£5.0m/€5.8m) in add-ons for the 24-year-old player, with a deal that benefits both parties being conceivable. The ‘limit’ for the transfer at Manchester United has not been disclosed, though.

According to Liverpool.com, the money being discussed for a player with only 12 months left on his contract has grown to be significant, especially in light of the value that Liverpool discovered in Alexis Mac Allister.

The Reds were correct to prefer Mount and think he would fit in well at Anfield, but at $77 million, it is easy to understand why the acquisition suddenly appears less desirable. Given that the Mount to Manchester United drama appears certain to continue on, Liverpool was wise to look elsewhere and should not be considering a move at that sort of price.

Newcastle turns to Sandro Tonali

Newcastle United reportedly came close to signing Inter star Nicol Barella last week for $64 million (£50 million/€58 million), but it never felt like a figure at which the Serie A club would accept payment.

Sandro Tonali, 23, will reportedly be moving to St James’ Park for $76 million (£60 million/€70 million), according to The Athletic, who reports that an agreement has been reached with AC Milan.

Newcastle needed to make a splash in the market this summer, but there are other interesting players who would have given Liverpool a little more cause for concern, according to Liverpool.com. One of them, for instance, was Barella, and another was Dominik Szoboszlai, who was mentioned as a potential target by the Newcastle Chronicle.

It would appear that Barella and other players are no longer on the table if Tonali is signed and a sizeable number of money (the vast majority of the $96m/£75m/€87m) budget for the summer that was reported by the Daily Mail is spent on the Italian player. There being one less bidder for the Champions League finalist can’t be a bad thing, especially with his club, Inter, under some financial strain. The Independent is among many saying that Liverpool is interested in Barella.
