Liverpool U18s win back-to-back pre-season friendlies against Salford City

The Liverpool U18s defeated Salford City in two 45-minute friendlies to kick off their preseason schedule on Saturday.

For the back-to-back games at the Academy, Marc Bridge-Wilkinson used two different XIs, and his team won 1-0 and 3-0.

Afolami Onanuga’s goal with five minutes remaining in the first game gave a young Reds team the victory.

Cody Pennington was responsible for creating the goal with a deft move and accurate through pass that put Onanuga in a one-on-one situation. And the midfielder calmly finished over the goalkeeper to put the ball in the net.

When Kareem Ahmed let Emmanuel Airoboma free down the right, Liverpool threatened early in the game, but Nathan Giblin was unable to catch the ball at the back post.

The Reds’ goalkeeper Kornel Misciur displayed outstanding reflexes to stop a potentially deadly Salford situation and maintain his clean sheet at the other end.

In the second game, Jayden Danns gave the home team the lead less than ten minutes after the game began by heading in his first of two goals after Trent Kone-Doherty expertly outwitted his defender and floated a beautiful ball to the far post.

After being set up by a pass from Kieran Morrison, Kone-Doherty scored Liverpool’s second goal to mark his comeback from injury.

After Keyrol Figueroa headed a shot against the post and Morrison missed the target with a long-range shot, Danns completed the scoring late in the game by successfully closing down the opposing goalkeeper.
