Chelsea women sign macario from lyon

Catarina Macario has agreed to a contract with Chelsea Women that will last through 2026. Macario missed all of last season due to an ACL injury, making her the first American to score in a Women’s Champions League final when she scored against Barcelona in the 2022 final.

The 23-year-old, who played the previous two seasons in France’s Division 1 Feminine, will formally join the team on July 1.

With her goal against Barcelona in the 2022 final, Macario made history by being the first American to score in a Women’s Champions League final. Lyon went on to win another European championship. She scored 23 goals in 33 games, which was essential in helping the team win the league that season.

She missed the Women’s World Cup this summer as a result of an ACL injury, which she had to rehabilitate from over the 2022–2023 season.

It follows the departure of Pernille Harder and Magda Eriksson this summer, who both joined Bayern Munich.

After moving, Macario said on the club’s official website: “I can’t wait to get started here. I’m overjoyed to have joined Chelsea, and I intend to do my best to honor the jersey in the coming years.

I am able to play as a No. 10 or a more conventional No. 9, and I am eager to team up with a number of talented forward players, like Sam Kerr, Lauren James, and Guro Reiten. Playing with Kadeisha [Buchanan] once more will be enjoyable.  I’ve already had some wonderful experiences in Europe thanks to Lyon, where I played alongside a lot of excellent players and, of course, won the Champions League.

“I hope to carry on those experiences here and bring the trophy home for Chelsea as well.”

At the age of 12, Macario, a Brazilian native, emigrated to the United States. She competed in collegiate football while attending Stanford University, where she won two collegiate athletic association championships and twice was awarded the MAC Hermann Trophy, given to the nation’s top men’s and women’s college soccer players.

Prior to making her senior debut in January 2021, Macario had previously represented the USA at the youth level internationally. Since then, she has amassed 17 caps.

Cat is one of the smartest, most talented attacking players in the world, and I think he will thrive in this Chelsea club, said head coach Emma Hayes. She offers an incredible winning mindset, a lot of flare, and expertise in Europe. I believe she will be adored by our supporters.

Paul Green, the general manager, said: “We’re very happy that Cat has joined the team. She is one of the top players in the world and will give our frontline a lot more dynamic, power, and pace. We are confident that she will succeed greatly at Chelsea.
