Barcelona signs Inigo Martinez to reinforce its defense

His 400 million euro termination clause. Due to the expiration of his contract with Athletic Club this summer, the Spanish international is moving on a free transfer.

With the addition of the seasoned center back from Ondarroa, who can also play left back, Xavi strengthens his defense, which had been thin with the retirement of Gerard Pique and the non-renewal of Jordi Alba.

Martinez has long been a target for Barcelona; they tried to sign him last season but were unable to fund his transfer; and this summer, they finally succeeded in getting his services.

Martinez, who transferred from Real Sociedad to San Mames in January 2018, made 18 appearances in the 22–23 season, including 15 in LaLiga Santander and three Copa del Rey contests. He also scored one goal.

In order to build a competitive team that can win all competitions, including the Champions League, the Catalan club’s largest unfinished business in recent seasons, Barcelona plans to make a number of signings this summer. According to Xavi, they must strengthen all of their lines.
